Lovely Lush: My Skin Savior.

Augh, I'm sorry but I have to tell you how much it pained me to write 'savior' and not 'saviour' in the title of this post.  I spent seven years perfecting my British English spellings and ended up falling head over heels in love with them.  Now all my American English spellings look harsh and cold and way less fancy.  But in an attempt to keep my trans-Atlantic nuances to a minimum in fear of morphing into Madonna or Mark Ronson (sorry, Mark, but your accent is so irritating), I am trying to remain firmly on the (American) ground I'm currently standing on and not use the pretentious line of 'well, I DID actually live in London for seven years, darling' (said in the poshest English accent I can muster).  Also, the pictures in this post are random and we need to just accept're not getting pictures of my face right now, no amount of make-up could make me look any less exhausted.

WINTER SKIN CARE.  That's what we are actually talking about.  Dammit.  Ok, I am bringing it up.  I never had much of an issue with my skin in the colder months until I moved back to the States.  I feel like this is a two-fold problem.  First, the cold in the UK is damp (i.e. there is the hope of some moisture).  In the US, it's dry and stings and burns.  Getting hit by even a light breeze can feel like a million (overstatement) band aids being ripped off.  Second issue...what the hell is up with this weather?!  It's 60F one day and 2F the next.  I would use numerous curse words to effectively explain this generally but I kinda feel like Lush is a brand which deserves more respect than that.

I love Lush.  And it's been saving my life (er, skin) during this unpredictable, mean and *enter curse word here* weather.  Since I generally have nice skin, which has gone bad, and then gone nice again thanks to Lush, I thought it would be disservice if I didn't share.

Shu Cleansing Oil: I've written about this product before because I am FULL-ON obsessed.  You can read about it here.  I use this product first because it gently takes off all my make-up (even my eyeliner which is more or less a miracle).  And it's an oil which means it helps to add some moisture back into my skin.

Let the good times roll

Let The Good Times Roll from Lush: This limited-edition scrub (yeah, it's for the holiday season only so I'd run to your local Lush to see if they have any left) is made up of maize, polenta, popcorn and a dash of cinnamon.  So it's super gentle and refined and also smells like DA BUSINESS!  I wish everything smelled this delicious.  It just takes a little bit to rub into your hands with water and then scrub your face.

Oatifix from Lush:  This mask is the bee's knees.  It's basically oats and bananas which will make it almost disappointing you are only meant to leave it on for a measly 10 minutes.  But damn.  This s**t works.  It leaves your skin incredibly smooth and ever so soft.

If I'm honest, I'm kind of a loser with moisturizers.  It's the age-old dilemma of knowing I need to take it seriously but without being able to justify a huge expense.  The never-ending quest for the skin care holy grail, a well priced moisturizer that really works.  But what I've got going on right now seems to be doing the job without breaking the bank.  When I need an extra moisture boost, I put a little Weleda Skin Food up on my face and follow-up with my normal moisturizer Murad Hydro Dynamic Ultimate Moisturizer.  If it took me ages to learn one thing, it's that when you need a moisturizer for very dry skin, the thickest creams aren't always the best.  It's not about how heavy it is but about how well it penetrates into your skin.  You're welcome for that little gem.

One other little tip...get facials at a local aesthetic science/cosmetology school.  If you're someone like me who can't afford to go to a salon often to get a facial, this is a great way to go about it.  Students need to practice so might as well be on you!  Treatments are heavily discounted and you also get to listen as someone learns about your skin specifically.  So you can understand your own skin a bit more while giving it a bit of a treat!
